Title A name given to the resource Robert Dellelo Oral History Interview: Transcript Subject The topic of the resource NPRA Guard/Prisoner interactions Drugs Race Lyman School for Boys National Institute of Corrections Hamm, Ralph Flemmi, Vincent Solitary Confinement Escape Prison Abolition Education Description An account of the resource Robert Dellelo, referred to as “Bobby” by friends, first entered the prison system at the age of thirteen. Dellelo grew up in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Following his early years in the Lyman school, Dellelo spent 40 years in prison, including 10 years in solitary confinement. He spent the majority of his time incarcerated in MCI Walpole. Bobby quickly became one of the leaders in Walpole, which was one of the most violent prisons in the United States. In 1972, the men incarcerated at Walpole organized the National Prisoners Reform Association (NRPA). Dellelo was the first President of the NPRA and helped run the institution for two months after Walpole’s correctional officers’ union went on strike. From March to May, 1973, the NPRA was in control of the prison. Dellelo begins his remarks below discussing a meeting/rally for prisoners rights held September 29, 1971, soon after the uprising and massacre at Attica Correctional Facility in New York. This event was an important step in the development of prisoner organizing at Walpole leading toward the founding of the NPRA. Title A name given to the resource Edward Rodman Oral History Interview: Transcript Description An account of the resource This oral history interview features the Reverend Edward Rodman, an Episcopal priest who played a major role in the Walpole occupation. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. He attended the Hampton Institute in Virginia prior to seminary. His advocacy for anti-racism began with sit-ins in Portsmouth and eventually, Rodman went on to become an Episcopal priest and teach at a Divinity school. During Walpole, he was a member of the Ad-HOC committee and the NPRA external board member who worked in tandem with groups within Walpole and outside of Walpole to successfully carry out the occupation. This discussion with Reverend Rodman explores the events leading up to and during the Walpole takeover. Beyond exploring Rev. Rodman’s organizing work in and outside of Walpole, this conversation highlights the broader landscape of prison activism and Rev. Rodman's hope for an abolitionist future.
