He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. He attended the Hampton Institute in Virginia prior to seminary. His advocacy for anti-racism began with sit-ins in Portsmouth and eventually, Rodman went on to become an Episcopal priest and teach at a Divinity school.
