Throughout much of the shift, prisoners broke windows and doors, set fires on the floor, etc. While damage was done to the building, no individuals were hurt, and no observers were threatened. In fact, prisoners served to protect observers from any potential harm. At around 5 am, the first tear gas cannisters were thrown into the prison, and guards began shooting at prisoners.
