Press Coverage
Considering the importance of public opinion to the NPRA’s mission, the press became an important entity through which information about Walpole was spread. In particular, the Boston Herald American often made racist attacks against Commissioner John O. Boone and sided with the guards’ union. On the other hand, the Boston Globe used information from members of the Ad Hoc Committee to report on how the prisoners’ union brought calm to Walpole during the takeover. This collection includes press releases from the NPRA, as well as correspondence that mentions the press.
