Prisoners feel betrayed and that Waitkevitch was not upholding his end of the bargain; there were also rumors of state troopers entering the prison. Throughout much of the shift, prisoners broke windows and doors, set fires on the floor, etc. While damage was done to the building, no individuals were hurt, and no observers were threatened. In fact, prisoners served to protect observers from any potential harm. At around 5 am, the first tear gas cannisters were thrown into the prison, and guards began shooting at prisoners.
